The Stars re-signed Sergei Zubov to a three-year contract on Sunday, keeping him from exploring the free-agent market.
3 year contract, 4 mil. a year, and a no-trade clause. Worth every penny, IMO.
Talks are continuing with Modano.

Well, here's more on Modano, also in the Dallas Morning News:
The Zubov deal could make it difficult to fit Mike Modano and another high-level defenseman under the cap, a problem Armstrong will have to worry about today. "We have had conversations with Mike and were never able to find common ground," Armstrong said. "That said, we still want to talk to him after he explores the market." Modano will be one of more than 200 players shopping themselves in the largest free-agent bonzana in league history. Armstrong said the Stars would also try to find a complementary defenseman. Doesn't sound good. **Dallas Stars fan for life!**

Looks like some greedy players all over the map will have to choose to play or get nothing. With a cap this changes the landscape.

Oh man - nothing against Zubie - but if I was to choose, I'd pick Mo anyday. He's the face of Stars hockey - I can't imagine the team w/out him!

I can't remember where I saw it, somewhere on espn.com, that modano had talked with gretzky and IF gretzky coaches phoenix this season the mo' would love to play for him there. Of course, I think Hull is still there unless that deal he signed with phoenix was one year. I'll have to see if I can find the article.

Gut feeling says he's gone before the day's done. I can't fathom the Stars without Mo.
Also, rumors were flying that Joe Nieuwendyk was being brought back to Dallas to provide that veteran leadership. My hopes were *so* high. But Joey signed with Florida today. I'm so sad. **Dallas Stars fan for life!**

I've heard rumour that NeanderHatcher might go to philly too so who knows? And Modano is rumoured to be a Bruin sometime today!
According to a report on RDS.ca, the Boston Bruins are expected to sign the 35-year-old centre with an announcement coming as early as Tuesday. Modano had three offers to consider with the Bruins being the front-runner. The Atlanta Thrashers and Pittsburgh Penguins are the others in the race for his services. |

you can most likely rule atlanta out. They just signed holik. If the B's can sign thornton I think mo' will end up somewhere else.

Keep your fingers crossed. From the DMN:
The Stars are close to signing center Mike Modano to a long-term deal, almost assuring that he will finish his career with one team. "We've had a number of productive conversations today and from my understanding we're very close to a deal," Stars owner Tom Hicks said. **Dallas Stars fan for life!**

After speculation that he may be on the move to another city, it appears that Mike Modano will remain - and most likely finish his career - with the Dallas Stars. According to RDS.ca, Modano signed a five-year deal to remain with the same organization that drafted him in 1988. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. On Monday, reports indicated that Modano would sign with one of three teams that were courting the forward's services - the Boston Bruins, Atlanta Thrashers and Pittsburgh Penguins. Drafted by the Minnesota North Stars in the 1st round (1st overall), Modano has collected 458 goals and 1106 points in 1101 career games. |

I gots a gut feeling modano is headed somewhere else. I just don't think the stars are going to ante up to 5 or 6 million a year.
Anyone else think Jarome Iginla's and Markus Naslund's deals had any influence on Mo's decision? Mo said it was "too much of a hometown discount". The only for sure thing is that it doesn't sound good. The B's just signed antoher player though so I'm not sure if mo is headed there or somewhere else, although, part of me wishes nashville would ante up and offer him 5 mill a year for five years. A huge marquee name like that would help and they need a good center. |

I know that Mo is the face of the Stars, but it sounds like players like him were part of the problem with the strike last year? If he's just staying getting greedy, then there is CLEARLY no loyalty to what he's done in previous years. I'd bet that he's not the only one acting this way, but it sure does leave a bad taste in my mouth when I hear that $17M isn't enough money.
