Here are the groundrules - I want all your opinions on everything about the season (pricing, merchandise, schedule, game ops, etc.) but if there is something you don't like tell me why you didn't like it, not just that it sucked. If you have ideas for improvement or additional stuff you want to see next season let us know. Again, don't hold back - your opinion is what matters most. Does Lubbock even want a hockey team (pro/college or otherwise)? I posted this thread to get the fans reaction and ideas for stuff they liked and didn't like from last year and so far the response has been for a lack of a better word, lacking. Except for the one guy who wanted me fired, you could hear a pin drop. So I ask this as a serious question - does Lubbock care enough to have or want a hockey program? Are they willing to support the Tech program or any other hockey program, not just with words, but with their money. Last year I thought we put a good product on and off the ice but with few exceptions the attendence wasn't that great and the support came from the few die hard fans and people who loved the game, or wanted to support Paul and the program. Again I am just asking this as Tim Castleman, the fan who wonders what happened and if it is even worth the effort that Paul and others put in to it. The Red & Black Attack Is Back - September 2007

I for one damn sure want hockey in Lubbock. i went to three or four games this year as i could i would have loved to have been to more but my schedule prevented it. Id love to have another pro hockey team too. i dont know if that will ever happen but we'll see i guess. Paul has done a great job with Tech hockey and i look forward to it continuing. I sure as hell wish the team got the respect they deserve from the joke that is the rankings commitee

But you'd be surprised how many people out there - even hockey fans - don't even realize TTU has a team. And some that do, just don't think that club hockey could be as exciting as minor league hockey. I don't know if I agree with that or not, but that's just me. Not very fair maybe, but the truth. Alot of folks don't even bother checking this board now that we lost the Kings. They just don't. It's nothing against Paul, they just found other things to do. You really have to quit taking things so personally dude.

If this is a front don't break my bubble! The Boys that I had any dealing with were polite respectful and meshed well with the crowd and other players. Its sad we didn't get the recognition we deserve but that should make us try harder and be stronger! This is a GREAT program the kings should have taken lesson's from these young men, They make me proud The Kings just made me sad they just did not care In the later years they took no interest in how they came off to the crowd, made me want my season ticket money back! I never thought I would be a hockey fan but I love it I and want more of it. I will be in the seats for Tech and if the chance arises for other hockey as well, but if they do come back several things have to change.

From Coach Fio, Castleman and all the others, my hat is off to you, and I think you all deserve high praise. I think I only missed a couple of games, so maybe I can speak with some authority... In no particular order: Observation #1 - Castleman got better as the year went on. In hockey grading, he ended up raising his plus/minus from a -10 to a +20 for the season. Criticism - Don't bait the opposing players, just report the facts. You can be entertaining (and you proved it later in the year) without being condesending to the opposition. Observation #2 - The Boston College team showed how a team should act as an ambassator to the school. Use them as a model in the future. They showed an incredible amount of class and I was pleased that TTU did too. BC showed that you don't have to fight (although I am not adverse to that) to play a great system. Let's remember, a fighting major means the kid has to sit the rest of the game and sit the next one - a pretty harsh penalty when you have a short season. Observation #3 - Great crowd for the Texas game, too bad they didn't answer the bell for round 2. It was a lot of fun talking with Steve Carlson, they have a great story to tell about the foundations they support with the proceeds from their gig and I'm glad they made it to Lubbock. I hope they come back for a return trip soon. Observation #4 - Get rid of the Chuck-a-puck! I don't know how much revenue that brought in, but to see 12 pucks vieing for position on the center ice circle was disheartning. I'm not a fan, and as my dad used to say, "a fool and their money were lucky to get together in the first place." Got to be a better revenue opportunity out there... Observation #5 - TTU has a marketing department - anyone there ever think to do a program design for extra credit? Observation #6 - I liked the guys singing between periods and after the games while promoting their CDs. Bring me more of that so the kids from school have a reason to hang out before, during and after. Observation #7 - Get some real tickets. I'm not saying that the kids at the gate lined their pockets...but for some reason I always felt like my money hit someone's pocket instead of the books. I certainly didn't mind paying my way in, and felt it supported the team, but I saw way too many people either get waved in or hop the gate and get in free. Observation #8 - I don't know why the Avalanche-Urinal decided to ignore the team, but they did a great job in doing so. What is the barrier of entry there? I think that KCBD has to read the news from the paper and the A-J gets their news from KCBD. Observation #9 - "Back in the day..." Mrs. Oldtimehockey and I were a host family for a couple of kids playing for the local Junior "A" team. I understand why the TTU kids want to be apartment, house or dorm mates, but why couldn't some families step forward and extend a welcome to their house (and maybe a good home-cooked meal once in a while) and be a billit. We had a great experience, and even though it was over 20 years ago, we still keep in touch with the kids - one of which just turned 40! Observation #10 - Who cares about a pro team, been there done it, have a couple t-shirts to prove it. I think a Tier 2 Junior "A" team would be cool. As a team owner, your expenses are smaller (definitely no salary cap!) and the kids (remember El Paso and Tulsa - both put on good games) are pretty hungry to move up or score a college commitment. Not to deminish what TTU did this season and in seasons past but if TTU couldn't field a team for any reason, I think that Fio would be a great Junior coach. In closing, I don't think Lubbock has never been asked if they wanted a team, just like they don't ask us if we want higher water bills, I think the fans here would be fans regardless, and the people who sit in the empty seats wouldn't know what they are missing if it hit them in the face. Anyway, thanks again, it was a lot of fun this year and I look forward to supporting TTU hockey in the future.

I attended all but two home games this year and if it was not for the efforts of Coach Fio and the TTU Organization, I would have had to drive to stupid Amarillo (Bad Hockey and Bad Fans) to get my hockey fix. The thougth of that just makes me sick. Praises: 1. TTU bringing in teams like El Paso, Tulsa and Boston College to Lubbock helped change things up. It was great to see some different teams instead of UNM, North Texas, A&M and UT. 2. The great crowds at the UT and BC games. The crowds seem to have gotten better at the end of the season. 3. The price for the games is perfect. You cannot go anywhere now days to be entertained for $5.00 per person. 4. I thought the merchandise was GREAT. The jerseys, caps, shirts, etc. were top quality and looked GREAT. 5. The special nights like the Henson Brothers were GREAT!!!! 6. Keep Post Game Skating and Adult League Hockey. 7. The TTU vs. A&M game in Dallas was a great idea and I hope it can be done again next season. 8. Having the TTU Pep Band, Raider Red, Cheerleaders and the Saddle Tramps at the UT game. 9. Having the concession stands open for the games. My wife and I attended many TTU Hockey games before Coach Fio took over the team and then concession stand were not available. Suggestions: 1. More on-ice contest for the fans to be part of. I really enjoyed watching the fans getting a shot at Michael Pruneau at the TTU vs. TTU game. Contest such as fans trying to shoot a goal for prizes. Maybe have the Adult Leagues play between periods and not just the kids. Before anyone says anything, I enjoy watching the kids play too. 2. More TV Ads. When the games were promoted by TV ads (UT & BC games), the big crowds came out. I spoke to some of the folks that came to those games and they said because they saw the TV ads they decided to attend. 3. Have the TTU Pep Band, Raider Red, Cheerleader and the Sadldle Tramps at more games. They really helped keep the crowd going. 4. NO MORE KIDS DAY GAMES. I took off work for that game and it was very sad to see the smallest crowd I had ever seen at a TTU Hockey game. 5. Think about have different types of food available throughout the season. Pizza at one game, Bar-B-Que the next, Mexican Food at another. Change it up alittle. 5. It would be awesome if TTU could get the BIG XII tourney in Lubbock next season. Once again, I want to thank Coach Fio and the rest of the TTU Organization for keeping hockey alive and well in Lubbock. I don't know that my wife and I would have done without TTU Hockey this year and we look forward to the 2008 - 2009 Season.

(Broomball, adult/youth hockey, contests, etc.) -Saddle Tramps, Pep Band, Cheerleaders, etch. created an outstanding atmosphere -I actually had a fairly positive view of the crowd sizes, Friday and Saturday games were fairly well attended, (not want you want to see from the organizations standpoint, but for a team that the majority of people in Lubbock don't even know exists, it was impressive) Sundays suck, and the kids day game was sad. No sport in town seems to do well on Sunday's, and you'll always compete with high school football and basketball on Friday's, and in Lubbock, that's big competition. -On that note, advertise, advertise, advertise. People have to know it's out there to even come in the first place. Even after they know it exists it's still an uphill battle to get them to actually come out to a game. I've tried at my office the whole season, and finally got the one other hockey fan out to the UT game. (He loved it and attended the BC games as well.) Most heard statement while wearing Tech Hockey merchandise: "I didn't know Tech had a hockey team." Why yes, they do. And if you have about 20 minutes I'll tell you all about it. -Advertise the skating as only $5, and if you don't have skates you can rent them for just $2. (This fools cheapskates like me who think "Ewe.. $7 no way." Instead I think only $5 wow, and just $2 to rent what a deal.) It's only after you have my money that the addition takes place in my brain, denial keeps me thinking I got a great deal. -Website, website, website. During the season I would check it daily for weekend game updates, information on upcoming games, only to find the same info time and time again. What's going on, what time is this happening, how do I sign up for a broomball team, how do I get into an adult hockey league, are their concessions at the games, do I have to pay to park, can I skate at the games, how much are tickets, do my kids have to have a ticket? All questions the consumer wants to know and many will not bother to seek out the answers, meaning they don't come to the game and spend money, if they can't find it on the website. (I for one like to communicate via email, or find information right on a website, so if I have to call for information I usually won't even bother. There are a lot of us out there.) (TTU hockey is all volunteer and I appreciate that, so the solutions to these problems are not as simple as they may appear, and I know that.) Overall it was a great season. It's a crime that they ended up 11th. My family and I loved every game. My 2 year old still screams "hockey game" "hockey game" as we drive past the coliseum. Hats off to Tim, Paul and everyone else that helped out. I look forward to another great year.

SELL JERSEY'S! I don't mean game worn (I have 2 and they are VERY game worn), I mean new jersey's. I have been asking via e-mail for the last 2 years and they still don't sell them. I am a season ticketholder for the Corpus Christi Rayz games and I wear my game worn jersey's with pride but I sure would love a new jersey to wear. I see people wearing new A&M and UT jersey's so they sell them. I just wish that Tech would. Is there any chance that it will happen???

A lot of outsiders like the website except there would be discrepancies with scores or out of date. After this season and last, I fully believe the rankings are controlled by hearsay and less with direct knowledge of the team so I would definitely put forth the effort to keep the website accurate and up to date. Additionally, put the merchandise on the website.

Suprised I remember my info to log in lol. I agree, I think the website needs to stay updated. People do check it but it got updated like 3 times this season so it's hard for people to keep up that aren't here. I also think a little more advertising would really help. I was talking to someone here in Lubbock that went to tech and loved hockey and didn't know there was a team. Once people come they'll have fun and come back, they just got to know it's here first. With the merchandise, I think it should be sold several places other than just at the games. I know a few of the shirts are very popular and people would want them, and the more people wearing shirts, the more the team is going to be advertised. Alot of people ask me where to get some of my shirts and right now theres no where. Just a few thoughts, wanted to put my two cents in! Go Tech!! "Hockey players wear numbers because you can't always identify them by dental records!"
